How To Choose The Best CBD Oil For You & Your Dog

Choosing A Quality CBD Oil For You & Your Dog

Not all CBD products are created equal. Not everyone makes a quality product and not all labels accurately describe what is in the bottle.

With the abundance of CBD products on the market, it’s easy to simply assume that these products are safe for consumption, but that is incorrect. It’s very important to do your due diligence in choosing the right CBD product for you and your fur baby.

Buy organic—Cannabis easily picks up contaminants from the soil that it’s grown. It is used for “phytoremediation” which means it is sometimes used intentionally to remove toxins from the soil. It is one of nature’s way of absorbing toxins, like chemicals and heavy metals out of the soil and ground water.

While Phytoremediation is an amazing and sustainable way to clean up mother earth, this means that we must be extra careful when it comes to CBD products and brands that we trust. For example, 1/3rd of the world’s hemp is produced in two Chinese Providences, and given the historical lack of environmental regulation in China, one could only imagine what type of toxins and heavy metals lay in the soil.

For this very reason, it is absolutely critical that your CBD products are sourced from soil free of pesticides, heavy metals and other contaminants.

Always ask for a certificate of analysis (COA). Reputable companies will provide a certificate of analysis showing their product has been lab tested and should show:

  • 0.3% THC or less;
  • CBD per milliliter and per bottle;
  • Free of contaminants like pesticides and heavy metals;
  • Free of residual solvents;
  • Free of bacteria, yeast and mold;

You should also look for:

  • Products with a CO2 extraction method. Carbon dioxide is used under high pressure and low temperatures to assure the purity of the product;
  • Products should be free of alcohol.
  • Beware of products that contain essential oils. While great for humans, essential oils can cause skin irritation in dogs and some are even toxic.

Understanding Serving Size

Understanding the correct CBD serving for you animal and you can be confusing. Many companies will show the amount of CBD per serving, the amount of CBD per milliliter and the amount of CBD per bottle. Always read the instructions on the bottle.

Serving sizes vary on the weight of your animal, the desired results, and your animal's metabolism. One size does not fit all!

It is recommended that you administer CBD oil orally, or mix with your dog's food. You’ll want to closely monitor behavior as it can take up to an hour to take effect. Its always best to start with the minimum serving size and increase if needed.

Buying CBD Oil

CBD is legal if it is derived from industrial hemp containing no more than 0.3% THC. I recommend  Kannaway's Product Line with the "Seed to Sale Guarantee," this premier CBD company offers the highest quality products. However, if purchasing elsewhere, always buy from a credible supplier who provides a Certificate of Analysis.

Potential Side Effects of CBD Oil

Since CBD is non-psychoactive and non-toxic, it will not cause an overdose in your pet, unlike products containing THC. However, as with anything new that you give your pet, there may be some trial and error.  Potential side effects may include:

  • Hyperactivity
  • Vomiting
  • Hypersensitivity
  • Disorientation
  • Excessive Sedation

If your dog or pet displays any of these side effects, stop the CBD. After they are feeling better, try resuming at a lower dose. If the conditions persist, fully stop the CBD and contact your vet.

Remember, it never hurts to do your own research. To date, there have only been a few studies published on CBD for animals, which limits the amount of true scientific data. However, there is a wealth of anecdotal evidence to help you make an educated decision. The American Kennel Club (AKC) Canine Health Foundation is currently funding a study on the effects of CBD on dogs with epilepsy.

CBD oil can be a highly effective and safe option for your pets. This page is intended to educate animal owners on the benefits of CBD while providing tips on how to purchase a quality product.
